The Minnesota Vikings will face the Chicago Bears without starting tight end Josh Oliver. While the return of T.J. Hockenson is a positive, the absence of Oliver leaves a gap in blocking, particularly on the edge. Sam Darnold might have been wondering who would step up in Oliver’s place, and now there’s an answer.
Nick Muse, the Vikings’ 2022 seventh-round pick, is being brought back to the active roster. Muse, who was previously on a 21-day practice window, was activated after taking just a week to complete the required workouts.
In order to make room for him, the Vikings waived former starting cornerback Akayleb Evans. Muse has appeared in two games this season, but played only 3% of the offensive snaps. Before his injury, he was primarily used on special teams.
With Oliver sidelined, it remains to be seen how Muse’s role may expand, though he’s only recorded one reception in his career, a 22-yard catch that resulted in a first down. Muse’s involvement in the offense could grow as the Vikings adjust to Oliver’s absence.
Meanwhile, the Vikings will have a chance to establish their running game against the Bears, whose secondary is strong but vulnerable on the ground. Aaron Jones, who struggled with just 39 yards in his last game against the Tennessee Titans, is recovering from an injury but claims to be in a better condition this week. If true, Jones’ improved health could benefit Minnesota’s offense.
With Oliver’s blocking now missing, it will be important to see how Muse and the other tight ends step up to fill the void in the blocking game.
