J.J. McCarthy left no doubt this week: he’s ready to take charge as the Minnesota Vikings’ starting quarterback.
Back in action after recovering from a torn meniscus that sidelined his rookie preseason, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has returned to full team activities — and he’s bringing a clear message with him.
“I’m ready to start,” McCarthy confidently told reporters on Tuesday. “I’ve put in the work and fully trust my skills and abilities.”
That self-assurance appears to be shared by the Vikings organization, which has clearly shifted its focus toward a younger, future-focused quarterback room. Gone are veterans like Sam Darnold — who passed for over 4,300 yards and 35 touchdowns last season — as the team bypassed high-profile names such as Aaron Rodgers in favor of developing McCarthy as their long-term answer under center.
While there’s technically a competition underway this offseason, with Sam Howell, Brett Rypien, and rookie Max Brosmer also on the depth chart, the battle looks more symbolic than serious. All signs point to McCarthy taking over the starting role before Week 1.
Despite the growing momentum behind him, McCarthy is handling the moment with a mix of confidence and humility — staying focused on earning the job the right way.
