Sam Darnold’s breakout 14-win season with the Vikings seemed to secure his future, earning him a three-year, $100 million deal with the Seahawks this offseason to be their starting quarterback — a move reminiscent of Kirk Cousins’ departure to the Falcons.
But much like Cousins, Darnold may not have fully escaped the pressure he faced in Minnesota. On Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft, Seattle selected Alabama QB Jalen Milroe with the 92nd pick — a move that echoes Minnesota’s interest in J.J. McCarthy had Darnold stayed.
Milroe, once considered a potential first-rounder and one of just 17 players invited to attend the draft’s opening night, likely won’t start right away. The Seahawks appear content to let him develop behind Darnold — at least for now.
Still, unlike Darnold’s situation in Minnesota, this time there’s a dynamic young quarterback waiting in the wings if he struggles early. That setup could create internal tension if expectations aren’t met.
Darnold’s contract includes a potential out after the 2026 season, with a manageable $19.2 million dead cap hit. That flexibility, combined with Milroe’s rookie deal, gives Seattle options.
Turning 28 this offseason, Darnold is coming off a career year with 4,319 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions — and his performance in his fifth offensive system in eight years will be closely watched now that a potential successor is in the building.
