The New York Yankees kicked off May leading the AL East with an 18-13 record, but injury woes continue to pile up. Their troubles began in spring training when 2023 AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole was ruled out for the season following Tommy John surgery. Now, the team has lost another key player: second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a right oblique strain suffered during Tuesday’s 15-3 rout of the Orioles. In his absence, Pablo Reyes and Oswald Peraza are expected to share time at second base.
Chisholm’s Rollercoaster 2025 Season Hits a Setback
Since his 2020 debut with the Marlins, Chisholm has built a reputation as an electric power-speed threat. That trend continued early in 2025, as he leads the Yankees with six stolen bases and ranks fourth on the team with seven home runs through 30 games. However, his offensive production has been wildly inconsistent. Across 125 plate appearances, he’s batting just .181 with a .304 on-base percentage and a .410 slugging mark.
Despite leading the team in steals, Chisholm has struggled to make consistent contact — only 19 total hits, including seven home runs, three doubles, and nine singles. He also holds the fourth-highest strikeout total in the American League with 39, and his 31.2% strikeout rate would be a career worst. That said, his .200 BABIP suggests he’s been somewhat unlucky and may rebound once healthy.
Still, his absence is a big blow for a Yankees lineup already without slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who was recently moved to the 60-day injured list due to an elbow issue.
Injury History Casts Shadow Over Chisholm’s Upside
Unfortunately, injuries have been a recurring theme in Chisholm’s career. After a 21-game debut during the shortened 2020 season, he played 124 games in 2021 but was limited to just 60 and 97 games in 2022 and 2023. He finally stayed mostly healthy in 2024, appearing in a career-high 147 games between Miami and New York.
Known for his flashy style and once featured as an MLB The Show cover athlete, Chisholm has only topped 100 games in a season twice. This latest setback may once again threaten his availability and consistency in 2025.
