Abdul Carter may have been denied the chance to wear one retired jersey number by a New York Giants legend, but another franchise great appears more open to the idea.
Former Giants quarterback Phil Simms has expressed his willingness to let Carter wear his retired No. 11 jersey — the same number Carter wore at Penn State. Speaking on FanDuel TV, Simms said he’d gladly allow it, even though those close to him advised against it. “I’d let him have it in a second,” Simms said. “I think it would be fun. It wouldn’t bother me.”
Simms also mentioned that his agent warned him not to give up the number, but he reiterated that if it were up to him, he’d probably say yes. Carter responded to the possibility on social media, calling it an “honor” to wear No. 11.
The Giants haven’t assigned a jersey number to Carter yet. The No. 3 overall draft pick initially showed interest in donning Lawrence Taylor’s iconic No. 56, but Taylor firmly declined. Simms’ openness to sharing his number follows a rare tradition among legendary players. Now the decision rests with Carter.
Would you like me to help draft a short social media post for Carter if he accepts the number?
