The Giants Are Scrambling for a Long-Term QB—And Time’s Running Out
There’s no sugarcoating it: the New York Giants are desperate to find a long-term answer at quarterback.
The past year-plus has been a brutal stretch for GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. They were publicly humiliated on HBO’s offseason edition of Hard Knocks, watching star running back Saquon Barkley walk away—straight into the arms of their NFC East rival and eventual Super Bowl champion, the Philadelphia Eagles.
To make matters worse, Barkley exploded for 2,000 rushing yards with the Eagles, while Schoen got roasted on national television—by his own son—for not trading up to draft Jayden Daniels. The kid told his dad he only gets one shot at being an NFL GM. Ouch.
That comment might still be haunting Schoen, especially after Daniels delivered what many are calling one of the most impressive rookie quarterback seasons ever.
Determined not to repeat history, Schoen tried to strike big in 2025. Reports say the Giants made a serious offer to the Tennessee Titans in the lead-up to the draft—dangling the No. 3 overall pick and a 2026 first-rounder—to move up and snag QB prospect Cam Ward.
Schoen even made a last-ditch call to Titans GM Mike Borgonzi on draft night, though it was too late. Tennessee had already made up its mind well in advance.
Despite the string of high-profile setbacks, the Giants did find some success in 2024. Rookie standouts Malik Nabers and Tyrone Tracy impressed, and newly acquired pass rusher Brian Burns lived up to the hype. So, not everything fell apart from a roster-building standpoint.
Still, the Giants have been so inconsistent under center that even they might have lost track of how many quarterbacks they’ve cycled through. In 2025, they’re clearly throwing everything at the wall—bringing in Jameis Winston, Russell Wilson, and even trading up to draft Jaxson Dart.
Schoen took a swing. It didn’t land, but at least he swung. With pressure mounting and jobs potentially on the line, you can’t blame him for trying. Schoen and Daboll both know what’s at stake heading into the 2025 season: win now, or else.
