The New York Yankees are off to a strong start in 2025, boasting a 21-16 record and sitting atop the AL East with a 2.5-game lead. True to their “Bronx Bombers” nickname, the Yankees lead all of MLB with 62 home runs, powered by Aaron Judge, who’s putting up MVP-level numbers once again.
But even with the offense firing on all cylinders, the Yankees have a glaring weakness: closing out games. Despite a blockbuster trade to acquire elite closer Devin Williams from the Brewers this past offseason, New York has struggled in the late innings.
One potential fix? Kenley Jansen.
According to Newsweek’s Jon Vankin, the Yankees could look to land the veteran closer — and future Hall of Famer — as a low-cost midseason rental. Jansen, currently with the Angels and on an expiring contract, could be had for a modest return.
Because Jansen would be a partial-season rental — likely hitting free agency or retiring after 2025 — the cost should be minimal,” Vankin wrote. He suggested the Yankees could land Jansen by parting with two lower-level pitching prospects, like Cade Smith (a 2023 sixth-round pick) and Kyle Carr (a third-rounder the same year).
With Jansen’s postseason pedigree and experience in high-leverage spots, he could be just what the Yankees need to solidify their bullpen for a serious World Series run.
