The New York Yankees’ to-do list involves both an addition and a subtraction: adding an infielder, preferably a second baseman, and subtracting Marcus Stroman from the roster. The team has no use for Stroman and is eager to move him, especially considering they have $18 million tied to him for 2025. Stroman may be dealt to teams like Toronto, San Diego, or St. Louis, with the Yankees reportedly willing to pay part of his salary to facilitate the trade.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are eyeing free-agent infielder Paul DeJong. The eight-year veteran, who has played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox, and Kansas City Royals, is known for his versatility in the infield. DeJong, who slashed .227/.267/.427 in 2024, can play shortstop, third base, and second base, making him a potential target for the Yankees.
A trade with the Toronto Blue Jays could also be on the table, potentially bringing back a player like Davis Schneider, though his 2024 performance wasn’t stellar. The Blue Jays could also consider moving shortstop Bo Bichette, but it would require the Yankees to part with prospects like Oswaldo Cabrera, Anthony Volpe, or even a high-caliber player.
Other options include Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner, a strong defender with solid on-base skills, or Luis Arraez, a contact hitter and versatile infielder who led the league in hits in 2024. Acquiring Arraez would likely require a package including Stroman, Rice, Cabrera, and a top prospect like Roderick Arias.
