New York Yankees starter Carlos Rodón exited Saturday’s game against the Athletics with a 6-4 lead, but the bullpen quickly let it slip away. By the next inning, the Yankees were trailing 7-6 after Fernando Cruz and Ian Hamilton failed to hold the advantage. The game ultimately ended in an 11-7 loss, highlighting the ongoing struggles within the Yankees’ bullpen—including recent difficulties from Devin Williams.
In response to the bullpen’s issues, the Yankees made a roster move that signals help may be on the way. The team announced on social media that reliever Scott Effross has been moved from a rehab stint with the FCL Yankees to Double-A Somerset. The 31-year-old is working his way back from a Grade 2 hamstring strain.
Saturday’s blown lead is just the latest example of inconsistency from manager Aaron Boone’s relief corps. While Williams may be the biggest name facing challenges, he’s far from alone—Hamilton and other key setup men have struggled, creating a major concern for a team with postseason hopes.
Effross’ return couldn’t be more timely. Boone is desperate for a reliable arm to bridge the gap to Williams in the ninth, and having Effross back would provide another dependable option—especially when Hamilton or Cruz falter in high-pressure moments.
