Despite being hit hard by injuries this season, the New York Yankees have powered their way to the top of the AL East. Even before Opening Day, stars like Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, DJ LeMahieu, and Giancarlo Stanton were sidelined. Since then, Marcus Stroman, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Oswaldo Cabrera have also landed on the IL. While the pitching rotation is clearly in need of reinforcements, the Yankees’ offense has been dominant—leading the majors in home runs, total runs, and on-base percentage, all without Stanton in the lineup.
With Stanton aiming for a return by the end of May and rising star Ben Rice making a strong case for everyday at-bats, the Yankees could soon face a lineup logjam. To address that, Zachary Howell of ClutchPoints floated a trade idea: send Stanton to the Seattle Mariners.
“Giancarlo Stanton is still rehabbing from elbow injuries and has yet to play in 2025,” Howell wrote. “But with Ben Rice’s emergence, there may simply not be enough at-bats to go around—making Stanton expendable.”
The Mariners, now 23-18 and leading the AL West, could be in a position to buy at the deadline, especially given their recent offensive struggles. Stanton, though a gamble due to his injury history and $66 million contract through 2027, could be the kind of high-upside bat Seattle needs. Howell suggests that acquiring Stanton would strengthen the Mariners’ lineup across the board and push Jorge Polanco back to third base, his natural spot.
Whether the Mariners offer a pitcher in return or just take on Stanton’s contract, it’s a trade that could benefit both clubs—freeing up space for Rice in New York and giving Seattle the offensive jolt they’ve been missing.
