The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation could revolve around J.J. McCarthy and Sam Darnold, but Daniel Jones might play a significant role in shaping the team’s future decision. In his end-of-season press conference, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah mentioned that signing Jones late in the season was a move to explore potential options for the 2025 season, alongside addressing immediate needs for the 2024 season.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell emphasized that Jones’ signing was aimed at strengthening the current quarterback room, but Adofo-Mensah acknowledged that it also gave the Vikings the opportunity to evaluate more quarterback choices for the future, particularly with questions surrounding Darnold and McCarthy. Adofo-Mensah noted the move allowed both the Vikings and Jones to assess if the team would be a good fit for him moving forward.
Jones, who struggled after leaving the New York Giants, shares a similar career arc to Darnold, who also had a rough start with the New York Jets. However, Jones, with significant playing experience and a playoff win, could be in a position to revitalize his career with the Vikings. The team has had a chance to evaluate Jones and seems interested in bringing him back, with Adofo-Mensah appreciating his talent and the dynamics he brought to the team.
Jones’ presence creates uncertainty for Darnold and McCarthy’s future with the Vikings. It’s possible all three quarterbacks could be on the roster in 2025, but Jones might prefer a more direct path to starting. If the Vikings move on from Darnold, Jones could have a good chance to start, especially since McCarthy is recovering from meniscus surgery and might need time to rebuild his body and mechanics. This scenario could resemble the plan the Vikings had for McCarthy in 2024, where he was expected to eventually take over from Darnold midseason, a role Jones could potentially fill if needed.
