The Atlanta Braves have been making headlines throughout the season, but not always for the right reasons. The team has been hit hard by significant injuries to key players like Reynaldo Lopez, Spencer Strider, and AJ Smith-Shawver. On top of that, they’ve had to cope with the loss of outfielder Jurickson Profar, who was suspended for 80 games earlier this year due to a failed drug test, sidelining him for the postseason.
Although the Braves have seen the returns of Strider and Ronald Acuña Jr. from injury, it hasn’t propelled them to the next level. In fact, Atlanta is still struggling in the standings and ranks among the worst teams in the National League. Given this reality, the Braves might look to shake things up by trading away players with expiring contracts while targeting controllable talent to build for the future. The current roster, though talented, doesn’t appear equipped to contend for a World Series this year, signaling that changes are needed.
4. Right-Hander Bryce Elder
The Braves have enough talent to avoid a full teardown. Instead of gutting the roster, they could aim to acquire a few controllable assets while moving players on expiring deals. One potential trade chip is Bryce Elder, once a top pitching prospect. After a strong rookie season, Elder struggled last year but has bounced back impressively this year, boosting his trade value. Atlanta could package him in a deal to acquire a better starting pitcher—names like Sandy Alcántara or Nick Lodolo come to mind—or possibly a shortstop like Ezequiel Tovar.
3. Right-Hander Hurston Waldrep
Hurston Waldrep finds himself in a similar spot to Elder. A highly regarded pitching prospect with a devastating splitter, Waldrep has faced challenges transitioning to the majors, struggling both last season and so far in 2025. Despite the Braves’ need for pitching, he hasn’t yet been relied upon as a key piece, indicating the team’s current assessment of him. Still, Waldrep could serve as the centerpiece of a major trade to bring in proven talent that helps push Atlanta back into playoff contention.
2. Right-Hander Raisel Iglesias
Moving to players with expiring contracts who could be moved if the Braves accept the season is lost, Raisel Iglesias stands out. Although it was unexpected to consider trading the closer, this season’s struggles and his contract situation make him a logical candidate. If Atlanta falls out of the race by the trade deadline, Iglesias’ value as a closer could attract suitors. However, if the Braves remain competitive, they’re more likely to seek bullpen reinforcements rather than parting with him.
1. Designated Hitter Marcell Ozuna
Marcell Ozuna is perhaps the most controversial trade candidate. The veteran DH has provided solid production for the Braves in recent years but, like Iglesias, is on an expiring contract. He’s unlikely to return unless the Braves commit to a significant financial investment, which their payroll likely can’t support given his age and recent performance. If traded, Ozuna’s market would be limited to a few teams, especially if he can’t move back to the outfield due to wear and tear. Still, he would attract notable interest if the Braves decide to shop him.
