The Minnesota Vikings finished the 2024 NFL season with an impressive 14-3 record, exceeding expectations. However, as they prepare for 2025, several key questions loom — especially at the quarterback position.
With Sam Darnold leading the offense last year before signing with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason, the Vikings are turning to J.J. McCarthy to take over as the new starting quarterback. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan, suffered a torn meniscus during the preseason and missed his entire rookie year. Now, the big question is: Is McCarthy ready to lead this team?
NFL analyst Matt Holder of Bleacher Report raised that very concern following OTAs, asking, “Is J.J. McCarthy ready to start?” At just 22 years old and coming off an injury, McCarthy faces the dual challenge of adjusting to NFL speed while recovering physically. He’s shown flashes in practice, but not without hiccups.
According to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, McCarthy was intercepted while attempting to squeeze a pass to Justin Jefferson under tight coverage. Later in practice, he was surprised by a blitz off the edge but recovered quickly to check down to a receiver — a sign of his growing awareness. It’s clear there will be a learning curve, and some early-season struggles may be inevitable.
Despite the uncertainty, head coach Kevin O’Connell has expressed strong confidence in McCarthy’s potential. He’ll have plenty of help around him, including running back Aaron Jones, elite wideouts Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, and reliable tight end T.J. Hockenson. The Vikings also addressed offensive line concerns in the offseason, though it may take time for the unit to fully mesh. All signs point to McCarthy having the tools to succeed — now it’s just a matter of how quickly he can adjust to the NFL spotlight.
