Giant news: Stuck in Limbo? NFL Analyst Says Kayvon Thibodeaux Is Trapped in ‘Career Purgatory’ with Giants

The New York Giants look well-stocked at edge rusher heading into 2025, led by veterans Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux, along with rookie Abdul Carter, the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft. But Carter’s arrival raises questions about Thibodeaux’s long-term role with the team. Although the Giants picked up his fifth-year option, effectively keeping him for at least one more season, Carter’s presence may make Thibodeaux more expendable.

Thibodeaux’s future is uncertain, and his up-and-down performance has drawn scrutiny. NFL analyst Bucky Brooks recently labeled him an “enigma,” placing him in a group of players who, in his words, “exist in a sort of purgatory between good and bad, young and old.”

Drafted fifth overall in 2022, Thibodeaux came into the league with high expectations as a dominant edge rusher. He’s shown flashes of that potential, tallying 21 sacks, six forced fumbles, and 46 quarterback hits over 43 games. Still, he hasn’t quite become the elite difference-maker many envisioned when the Giants drafted him.

With stars like Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, and rookie standout Abdul Carter drawing offensive attention this season, Thibodeaux should see more favorable one-on-one situations—opportunities he’ll need to capitalize on. The Giants also added depth by signing Chauncey Golston in free agency, making the edge rotation even more competitive.

While Thibodeaux has shown promise and is reportedly in the best shape of his career, he’ll need to produce consistently to maintain his role—or risk falling down the depth chart and possibly being traded. Despite the pressure, he’s welcomed Carter’s addition and remains optimistic heading into the season.
