New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo is facing a challenge off the field as he prepares for his first NFL season.
The former Arizona State standout is currently involved in a lawsuit related to a golf course accident that allegedly caused a career-ending injury to his college teammate, Mattheos Katergaris.
According to Jason Wolf of the Arizona Republic, Skattebo’s attorney, Todd Rinner of Snell & Wilmer, firmly denies the allegations, stating there is no credible evidence linking Skattebo’s actions to Katergaris’ injury. The lawsuit, which was filed on June 6, claims that Katergaris suffered a serious elbow injury after Skattebo allegedly ignored safety limits by jumping on a golf cart that was already overloaded, causing the back seat to collapse.
Katergaris, who played offensive line at Arizona State, reportedly sustained a severe laceration that reached down to the bone and a nearly complete rupture of his distal triceps tendon, requiring surgery and extensive rehabilitation. The incident took place in July 2023, before Skattebo’s college football debut.
Skattebo’s legal team is pushing for the case to be dismissed, with the next court update expected in February.
Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Skattebo is focused on earning his spot with the Giants. Drafted in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, he’s seen as a physical complement to Tyrone Tracy Jr., bringing toughness to the backfield and strong pass protection skills that could see him carve out a significant role in passing situations. The team does not anticipate the lawsuit affecting his standing.
