The New York Giants may have pulled off one of the biggest steals of the 2024 NFL Draft, selecting dynamic pass rusher Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick. Many already see him as an early front-runner for Defensive Rookie of the Year, and the hype is building fast.
Carter joins a defense already stacked with pass-rushing talent, including stars Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Naturally, fans and analysts alike wondered how he’d fit into such a loaded unit.
But after a strong showing during OTAs, it’s clear the Giants have big plans — and they’re not boxing him into just one role.
Giants to Use Carter as a Defensive Swiss Army Knife
Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen emphasized that the goal is simple: keep the best 11 defenders on the field — no matter where they line up.
“We’ve got to find ways to get the guys that can impact the game on the field,” Bowen told reporters. “Whatever way we’ve got to maneuver to do that.”

According to John Schmeelk of Giants.com, Carter is already being deployed in different spots across the defense. A clip posted by Carter on social media this week gave fans a preview — showing him rushing from the interior line, lined up over a guard rather than his traditional edge position.
With experience at both edge rusher and off-ball linebacker, Carter brings a rare blend of athleticism, speed, and versatility — making him a nightmare for opposing offenses, regardless of where he’s lined up.
Coming off a monster final season at Penn State, where he racked up 12.0 sacks and a nation-leading 24 tackles for loss, Carter enters the NFL as one of the most polished and explosive defenders in his class.
And the Giants? They’re wasting no time finding ways to unleash him.
Their goal: build one of the NFL’s most dangerous pass-rushing units — and Abdul Carter could be the key piece that takes them there.
