What’s an off day for the Braves without a bit of roster tinkering? Predictably, Atlanta used the downtime to shuffle the edges of the squad.
Let’s be honest—most of these moves won’t change much. Stuart Fairchild, for example, owns a .260 expected wOBA and a 45 wRC+ over 36 plate appearances. With Ronald Acuña Jr. healthy again and Eli White still hanging around, Fairchild is unlikely to see much action. He’s essentially the backup pinch-runner when Luke Williams isn’t available—a fitting role, really.
Then there’s José Azocar, who managed just one plate appearance in a Braves uniform after being DFA’d by the Mets, clearing waivers, and signing with Atlanta a couple weeks ago. His career 74 wRC+ doesn’t inspire confidence, though his .341 xwOBA this season is at least somewhat intriguing. But again, if he’s mostly there to warm the bench and clap, the difference is negligible.
As for Nacho Alvarez Jr., his brief stint in the majors last year was rough—he posted a surprising -0.5 fWAR in just 32 plate appearances. This season, he’s been sidelined with a wrist injury since spring.
After a short rehab stint in complex ball and Triple-A, he’s headed back to Triple-A for now. Some advanced metrics suggest he could develop into a useful MLB piece, but fundamental issues—like his struggles hitting fastballs—cast doubt on his long-term potential.
