Phillies Make Roster Moves: Aaron Nola Shifted to 60-Day IL, Buddy Kennedy Called Up
The Philadelphia Phillies made a notable roster adjustment on Thursday, placing veteran right-hander Aaron Nola on the 60-day injured list to clear a spot for infielder Buddy Kennedy, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Utility player Weston Wilson was optioned to make room.
Nola, 32, had already been sidelined since May due to a sprained right ankle, but during his recovery, he developed a stress reaction in his rib cage, further delaying his return. He won’t be eligible to come off the IL until mid-July.
The Phillies’ longtime starter has had a rough 2025 campaign, posting a 1-7 record with a 6.16 ERA over nine starts. His May 14 outing against the Cardinals was particularly brutal, allowing nine runs on 12 hits in just 3 2/3 innings — both career worsts. He’s given up four or more earned runs in five of those nine starts. Despite his current struggles, Nola has been a staple of the Phillies rotation for 11 seasons, compiling a 105-86 record with a 3.78 ERA over 277 starts. He was an NL Cy Young finalist in 2018, when he also made his only All-Star appearance.
Buddy Kennedy rejoins the big-league roster after playing eight games with the Phillies last season. The 25-year-old has appeared in 54 MLB games over three seasons with the Diamondbacks, Tigers, and Phillies, hitting .203 with two home runs and 19 RBIs.
Weston Wilson, 30, heads back to Triple-A after batting .194 with one homer in 20 games this year. Over parts of three seasons in Philadelphia, Wilson holds a .264 career average with five home runs in 68 games.
