The New York Yankees have bolstered their bullpen with the acquisition of Devin Williams as their new closer, but MLB analyst Rucker Haringey believes their work isn’t done yet. According to Haringey, the Yankees still have a crucial need for a left-handed reliever and should focus on signing Andrew Chafin in free agency.
Haringey suggests that Chafin would be a strong fit, providing the Yankees with a veteran arm capable of handling high-leverage situations against left-handed hitters. With Tanner Scott being a top choice for the Yankees, but ultimately signing elsewhere, Chafin becomes the ideal alternative. Chafin, who pitched for the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers in 2024, appeared in 62 games and posted a solid 3.51 ERA, striking out 70 batters in 56.1 innings.
Despite a slight decline in velocity, Chafin remains tough on left-handed hitters, making him a valuable asset to the Yankees bullpen. His age could make him a potential bargain on a short-term deal, and Haringey believes the longer the Yankees wait, the more likely they are to secure a deal at a lower price.
The Yankees have reportedly expressed interest in Chafin, with USA Today’s Bob Nightengale confirming that the team has had discussions with the reliever. Along with their efforts to strengthen the bullpen, the Yankees have also been looking for an infielder and have been exploring trade options, including dealing Marcus Stroman. New York’s pursuit of Chafin, along with other strategic moves, highlights their ambition to keep up with the competition, especially as the American League has seen some weakening during the offseason.
