The New York Giants are making headlines across the NFL, but not just because of their crowded quarterback room. While the spotlight remains on their signal-callers, there are other positions on the roster that could use some serious upgrades before the season kicks off.
Head coach Brian Daboll is back for what could be a make-or-break season after the team’s disappointing 3-14 finish last year. If the Giants hope to turn things around, they’ll need more than just solid quarterback play—they’ll need reinforcements elsewhere, especially at tight end.
Giants Urged to Target Star Tight End in Offseason Trade
In a piece published by Gmen HQ on July 5, writer Tommy Jaggi floated the idea that the Giants should pursue Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth, following a blockbuster deal involving the Dolphins, Steelers, Jonnu Smith, Jalen Ramsey, and Minkah Fitzpatrick.
With the Steelers suddenly overloaded at tight end—boasting Smith, Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, and Connor Heyward—Jaggi believes Pittsburgh may be open to trading one of them.
“The Steelers may be willing to part with one after securing Jonnu Smith,” Jaggi notes, adding that Giants GM Joe Schoen should already be on the phone.
Freiermuth, a former second-round pick, has put up solid numbers with 88 receptions, 884 yards, and 8 touchdowns over his career. He was also the only Pro Bowler on the Dolphins’ 2024 roster prior to being dealt to Pittsburgh.
How the Giants Could Make the Deal Work
Cap space could be a hurdle—the Giants currently have just over $3.8 million available, per Over the Cap. However, Jaggi highlights a couple of ways to create flexibility:
- Restructuring Andrew Thomas’ deal could free up over $12.5 million
- Releasing Rakeem Nunez-Roches would open an additional $3.6 million
That kind of financial maneuvering could make a Freiermuth trade entirely feasible.
Why Freiermuth Makes Sense for New York
The Giants’ current tight end group—Theo Johnson and Daniel Bellinger—has left much to be desired. Freiermuth would provide an instant upgrade in the passing game. While he’s only an average blocker, he’s a reliable target and consistent producer when healthy, having caught at least 60 passes in three of his four seasons. The only exception was in 2023, when he was limited to 12 games due to injuries.
Jaggi also points out that Freiermuth already has solid chemistry with Russell Wilson, something that could immediately benefit the Giants’ offense.
Will It Happen?
There’s no official word on whether the Steelers are willing to part with Freiermuth, but with a deep tight end room, it’s not out of the question. And if he’s available, the Giants could be one of the most logical—and needy—landing spots.
