Jesse Chavez is back with the Atlanta Braves for a remarkable seventh time, marking his second stint with the team this season.
The Braves added the 41-year-old veteran reliever to their major league roster ahead of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. This move is the sixth time since 2021—and the seventh overall since 2009—that Atlanta has brought Chavez onto the roster.
Earlier this season, Chavez pitched three innings for the Braves after being called up on April 1, allowing two runs before being released and granted free agency. He later re-signed with the team.
To make room, Atlanta optioned left-hander Dylan Dodd to Triple-A Gwinnett and moved right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach to the 60-day injured list due to a fractured right elbow, likely ending his season. Schwellenbach’s injury led to a bullpen-heavy game on Saturday, where the Braves used seven pitchers in a 10-inning, 9-6 loss to Baltimore. That situation prompted the team to bring in Chavez to reinforce the pitching staff.
Chavez was first acquired by the Braves in December 2009 via a trade with Tampa Bay for Rafael Soriano. He was part of Atlanta’s 2021 World Series-winning team after signing a minor league deal.
A major league veteran of 18 seasons, Chavez debuted with the Pirates in 2008 and has played for nine teams, including multiple runs with Toronto, the Angels, Texas, and the Cubs.
