The New York Yankees have several gaps in their roster that need to be addressed if they hope to contend for a World Series title.
One major area of concern is third base, and they could also use reinforcements in the starting rotation. While Luis Gil is expected to return next month, the overall depth of the rotation remains questionable. A top three of Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, and Gil would be strong, but relying on Marcus Stroman, Cam Schlittler, or Will Warren in a postseason setting could be risky.
Injuries to key starters would leave the Yankees vulnerable, and although third base might be the more pressing issue, Jim Riley of BALLCAP Sports has suggested that the team could make a bold move by trading for Zac Gallen and Eugenio Suárez to strengthen their playoff push.
Suárez would address the Yankees’ biggest position need. The current third base options—J.C. Escarra, Oswald Peraza, and Jorbit Vivas—lack significant offensive production. Suárez, on the other hand, is enjoying an All-Star season with a .889 OPS, 31 home runs, and a league-leading RBI total through 95 games. He could step in as Aaron Boone’s everyday third baseman.
As for Gallen, while he’s not having a standout season in 2025—posting a 5.40 ERA in 20 starts and set to hit free agency this offseason—he still brings substantial upside. When Gil returns, Gallen could serve as a strong No. 4 starter with ace potential. Between 2020 and 2024, he was among baseball’s elite pitchers, compiling a 3.34 ERA over 128 starts and earning multiple Cy Young nominations. He was also an All-Star just last year, and a new environment might help him regain his form.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Diamondbacks are making both Suárez and Gallen, among other players, available in trade talks. Acquiring both could be the move the Yankees need to take control of the AL East and gear up for a deep postseason run.
