Reds Eye Shocking Reunion with Eugenio Suárez — But One Major Roadblock Could Ruin It All

After dropping a series to the Washington Nationals earlier this week, the Reds are now 53-50 and trail the final National League Wild Card spot by 2.5 games. The team is clearly in need of a right-handed power bat and some bullpen reinforcements.

According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, the Reds have the prospect capital to make a run at Eugenio Suárez, but pulling off a deal remains unlikely.

“They could put together a package with two of these three pitching prospects—left-hander Adam Serwinowski, right-hander Ty Floyd, or right-hander Luke Holman,” Bowden wrote. “Or they could swap one of those arms along with a middle infielder like Peyton Stovall or the versatile Tyler Callihan, who’s currently on the injured list.”

However, Bowden added that with strong interest expected from other teams, Arizona may demand one of Cincinnati’s top-tier prospects—like third baseman Sal Stewart or corner infielder Cam Collier—to get a deal done.

Reds general manager Brad Meador made it clear earlier in the week to MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon that the organization is reluctant to part with its top young talent.

“There might be a little of both,” Meador said Saturday. “We want to compete this year, but our long-term vision is built around drafting, developing, and maintaining sustainable success. We’re not going to sacrifice the next five years for a short-term move.”

At this point, it doesn’t appear the Reds are positioned to win a bidding war for their former third baseman.
