The Cincinnati Reds may have a key opportunity to strengthen their outfield ahead of the MLB trade deadline. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Miami Marlins are reportedly open to trading outfielder Dane Myers.
Myers has stood out defensively this season, recording 4 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) and 4 Outs Above Average (OAA) — numbers that surpass those of current Reds outfielders like Will Benson, Jake Fraley, and Austin Hays.
He also addresses a major offensive need for Cincinnati: production against left-handed pitching. Myers is hitting .324/.385/.493 with a 146 wRC+ versus lefties, making him an ideal platoon bat. His presence could also allow manager Terry Francona to keep infielders like Noelvi Marte and Santiago Espinal in their natural positions, rather than using them in the outfield.
Though Myers is under team control through 2028 — potentially raising his value — his age (29) could limit what Miami expects in return. Rosenthal reports that while the Marlins won’t part with him easily, the emergence of top outfield prospect Jakob Marsee makes a deal more likely.
With Miami in full rebuild mode and the Reds having enough prospect depth to work with, a trade seems feasible. Cincinnati might be reluctant to give up top-tier names like Sal Stewart or Chase Burns, but a package centered around prospects such as Edwin Arroyo, Adam Serwinowski, or Chase Petty could be enough to make a deal happen.
The Reds, who just avoided a sweep by Washington and sit 2.5 games out of the final NL Wild Card spot, could greatly benefit from adding Myers — especially if they pair the move with some bullpen reinforcements to fuel a stronger playoff push.
