The New York Yankees have several roster gaps to fill this offseason, with the biggest focus on superstar outfielder Juan Soto. Whether they manage to bring Soto back will shape the entire course of their winter plans. In addition to Soto, the Yankees need to replace Anthony Rizzo at first base, find a solution at second base for Gleyber Torres, and add depth to their pitching staff.
FanSided’s Jacob Mountz has identified an ideal target for the Yankees: international free agent Hye-Seong Kim. Projected to sign a three-year, $24 million deal, Kim could be a valuable addition. Not to be confused with San Diego Padres shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, Hye-Seong is a highly regarded Korean infielder who has earned the KBO Golden Glove award for the past three years, with the 2024 winner still to be announced.
Mountz recently recommended the Yankees pursue Kim, pointing out that his elite defensive skills could help address New York’s defensive struggles from the previous season. “Kim is considered one of the best defenders in Korea, and his skills would be a welcome upgrade for the Yankees,” Mountz wrote. “While we can’t predict how his numbers will translate to MLB, if he maintains an on-base percentage of .350 or better and continues to steal bases at his usual rate, he could be a real game-changer.”
In 2024, Kim posted impressive numbers, hitting .326 with 41 extra-base hits, including 11 home runs, 75 RBIs, and 30 stolen bases in 127 games for the Kiwoom Heroes. The idea of adding him for under $10 million per year would be a sensible move for the Yankees, especially if they re-sign Soto, as it would limit their spending elsewhere.
However, if the Yankees miss out on Soto, they may pivot to targeting a more expensive, proven infielder instead. Regardless, Kim presents an intriguing option for the Yankees this winter.
