Reds Rumored to Have Interest in Eugenio Suárez Reunion
Recent trade rumors suggest that the Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks have mutual interest in a potential deal involving All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez. As one of the most in-demand hitters at this year’s MLB trade deadline, acquiring Suárez won’t come cheap.
The Reds certainly have the prospect depth to pull off a major move. In fact, among all teams reportedly in talks with Arizona, Cincinnati may have the strongest trade assets. The real question: Are they willing to meet the high asking price?
Suárez is having a standout season with the D-backs, slashing .254/.325/.598 with 36 home runs and 86 RBI. Since being traded by the Reds before the 2022 season, the 34-year-old has compiled a .243/.325/.466 line, with 119 home runs and a 123 wRC+, while continuing to provide strong defense at third base (8 Outs Above Average over the past four seasons). He’s also been worth 14.9 fWAR since the start of 2021.
What a Trade Might Cost Cincinnati
So what would a potential trade package look like? Reports suggest Arizona is prioritizing young, controllable pitching at the deadline. The Reds have plenty of that, but top-tier arms like Chase Burns and Rhett Lowder are reportedly off-limits.
However, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic, the D-backs are interested in right-hander Chase Petty, a fringe top-100 prospect. Petty could serve as a headliner in a deal, but it would likely take more than just him to seal it.
Reds fans should brace for the likelihood of an overpay—a common reality when contenders go shopping in a seller’s market. With multiple teams expected to pursue Suárez, the cost could climb quickly.
Still, for a team on the cusp of playoff contention, Suárez could be exactly the kind of impact bat Cincinnati needs to make a serious run.
