The Detroit Tigers signed Gleyber Torres to a one-year contract on Saturday, making him their everyday second baseman. Torres chose this one-year deal over multiple multi-year offers, opting for a chance to play for one of the American League’s most promising teams in 2024.
However, one of the offers he turned down reportedly didn’t come from his former team, the New York Yankees. According to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, the Yankees did not make an offer to retain Torres, allowing the two-time All-Star to leave without any effort to keep him.
Torres joined the Yankees through a trade in 2016 and became an All-Star in 2018 and 2019. However, his offensive production and defense at second base declined over time. Eventually, the Yankees decided it was time to part ways with him. Torres had other suitors, including reports that he turned down an offer from the Washington Nationals before agreeing to terms with Detroit. The Los Angeles Angels were also reportedly interested.
In his first comments as a Tiger on Sunday, Torres expressed pride in his time with the Yankees but did not confirm whether they had offered him a contract. He did, however, state that he did not feel like he was a priority for the team anymore.
“I’ve got great friends there, great communication with the entire organization,” Torres said, per McCosky. “I feel proud of myself for being with the Yankees for seven years, but now I’m with Detroit and just really happy they gave me the opportunity to play next year. I think they have other priorities and I’m not on the list. I’m good.”
