The New York Yankees are working to fill the void created by the anticipated departure of Juan Soto to their crosstown rivals, the New York Mets, in 2025. However, their offseason moves aren’t finished yet. Before adding additional hitters to strengthen their lineup for a potential World Series run, the Yankees must first address a few roster concerns, with starting pitcher Marcus Stroman likely on the move. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees are actively trying to trade Stroman. The challenge, however, is that Stroman is set to earn $18.3 million in 2025, with a vesting option for $18 million in 2026 if he pitches 140 innings next season. To facilitate a trade, the Yankees are reportedly willing to cover part of his salary to make him a more attractive target for other teams.
While Stroman’s trade could help the Yankees free up some funds, they are also seeking to bolster their infield, particularly at third base. However, despite the need for improvements, Heyman notes that this doesn’t necessarily position them as major players for top third basemen like Alex Bregman or Nolan Arenado, who are available through free agency or trade.
There are also whispers that the Yankees may pursue Luis Arraez, potentially as part of the Stroman trade or in its aftermath. However, Heyman suggests that there is currently little momentum behind this idea. Whatever the outcome, it seems unlikely that Stroman will be part of the Yankees’ 2025 Opening Day roster.
