The New York Yankees must improve their roster for the 2025 season if they want to avoid being outpaced by the dominant Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers have already strengthened their team by acquiring two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, while the Yankees are still pursuing Juan Soto.
In addition to Soto, the Yankees aim to make upgrades across their lineup and pitching staff. While they may not urgently need a starting pitcher, they would be wise to seize any opportunity to land an elite arm. One possibility is a reunion with New York Mets pitcher Luis Severino, who is expected to sign a four-year, $85 million deal, according to Spotrac. However, FanSided’s Jacob Mountz strongly advises the Yankees against this move. “Before completely ruling out Severino, it’s important to acknowledge he still has the ability to pitch,” Mountz noted. “During this past postseason, we saw glimpses of his former self, as he posted a 3.24 ERA over 16.2 innings.” Mountz continued, pointing out that Severino still has electric stuff but hasn’t been consistently elite. If he were to abandon his sinker and changeup—the two pitches that have caused him the most trouble—and use his cutter more frequently, he could return to form. But for now, Mountz cautions, he isn’t the kind of risk a playoff-bound team with pitching concerns should take.
