Starting pitcher Bryce Elder has emerged as one of the most fascinating figures in the Atlanta Braves organization. After being called up to the majors in 2022 as a 22-year-old, Elder delivered 54 impressive innings for the Braves that season. He built on that success in 2023, logging 174 2/3 innings with a 3.81 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, earning him a spot in the All-Star Game. It appeared the young right-hander was just hitting his stride.
However, the 2024 season was a stark contrast. Elder struggled mightily, posting an ERA over 6.50 and a negative WAR, which led to him spending most of the year in the minors. Meanwhile, Spencer Schwellenbach seized the opportunity and shined in his absence. Now, it seems Elder no longer has a clear path to the Braves’ major league roster. Despite the uncertainties surrounding Atlanta’s starting rotation, the team appears to have better options. AJ Smith-Shawver has turned heads during spring training, and former first-round pick Hurston Waldrep is making strides to climb the organizational ladder.
Given Elder’s inconsistent performance during his various call-ups and demotions, the Braves are likely to use him as a trade chip at the 2025 deadline or simply let him walk at the end of the season. Moving on from Elder makes sense for both sides. Atlanta doesn’t seem inclined to give him another shot as a starter, and Elder could benefit from a fresh start with a new team.
There’s a possibility another organization sees untapped potential in the young righty and considers trading for him. For that to happen, Elder would likely need to show improvement in the minors this year. Regardless, his future with the Braves seems uncertain, and a change of scenery might be the best outcome for his career.
