The NFL Scouting Combine has sparked a flurry of rumors making headlines, one of the most surprising being that legendary tight end Rob Gronkowski might return to the league. The New York Giants, who are looking to improve their offense, could potentially keep an eye on this development.
Rob Gronkowski rumored to be eyeing an NFL comeback
Cecil Lammey of DenverSports.com reported that Gronkowski, a four-time Super Bowl champion, may be looking to return to the NFL. However, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport quickly shot down the rumor, stating there’s no truth to it.
Could the Giants persuade Gronkowski to return?
Although the rumor has been dismissed, there’s still a possibility that, if Gronkowski does decide to make a comeback, the Giants could be his destination. In 2023, Fox Sports shared comments from Gronkowski on the “Up & Adams Show” where he stated that only Giants head coach Brian Daboll could convince him to come out of retirement.
Given that Daboll served as Gronkowski’s tight ends coach from 2013 to 2016, he may still have the influence to bring the tight end back into the fold. If so, Gronkowski would add valuable championship experience to the Giants. The former Arizona player last played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021, where he racked up 802 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

Although Gronkowski may not reach the same level of performance, he would still represent a significant upgrade over the Giants’ current tight ends, Theo Johnson (331 receiving yards) and Daniel Bellinger (125 receiving yards), who only combined for one touchdown last season. His on-field presence and the energy he could bring to New York might help turn things around after a rough 2024 season in which they finished 3-14.
Lammey reported Tuesday afternoon: “League sources tell me 4X Super Bowl champion TE Rob Gronkowski is considering a return to the NFL. He worked with Sean Payton at Fox, and I’m told he loves Denver & QB Bo Nix. (Two of his brothers, Dan and Chris, had brief stints with the team).”
