After several seasons of struggling to field a competitive major league roster, the Boston Red Sox are entering the 2025 campaign with renewed optimism. A blockbuster offseason, highlighted by the signings of **Alex Bregman**, **Garrett Crochet**, and **Walker Buehler**, has transformed the team’s outlook and sparked hopes of a playoff push.
However, the Red Sox are already facing some early spring drama, particularly surrounding the third base position. The arrival of Bregman has sparked debate over whether he or **Rafael Devers** will man the hot corner, with Devers pushing back against the idea of losing his spot during his first comments of the spring last Monday.
Manager **Alex Cora** and Chief Baseball Officer **Craig Breslow** have their hands full with several roster decisions, including the third base dilemma, whether top prospects like **Kristian Campbell** will make the team, and which fringe players will be sent to the minors.
On Tuesday, Cora appeared on WEEI’s *Greg Hill Show* and addressed the looming roster crunch, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to handle the decisions. *“Decisions will be made in a few weeks, and there’s going to be people upset,”* Cora said. *“There’s going to be people sent down, and they’re going to be upset at the manager and Craig. But that’s the good thing about having good players. Three years ago, we didn’t have this conversation.”*
Cora also emphasized the maturity of the clubhouse, noting that Bregman has already been working with Devers on defensive techniques at third base. *“As far as the clubhouse, I’m not worried. They’re grown men, and we have adults in the room now. Alex is working with Raffy at third base. The first thing he did was tell him about glove presentation, and Raffy got it right away.”*
Early in the season, both Devers and Bregman could see time at third base, especially if **Masataka Yoshida’s** recovery from shoulder surgery is delayed. Ultimately, the team’s decision on Bregman’s position—whether at third or second base—may hinge on Campbell’s readiness to claim the second base job.
For the Red Sox, the hope is that Cora’s confidence in the team’s cohesion proves correct, allowing them to navigate these roster battles and emerge as a unified contender in 2025.
