Another MLB season, another massive contract—this time, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. lands a 14-year, $500 million deal with the Blue Jays. But what does this mean for the Braves? Two words: Ronald Acuña Jr.
Acuña signed an eight-year, $100 million extension with Atlanta early in his career. It looked like a steal after his unanimous MVP win in 2023. But last season, after suffering a second ACL tear, it reminded everyone of the risk Atlanta took—and why players often take the guaranteed money early.
Acuña’s current deal runs through 2028, setting him up to hit free agency just before turning 31. While that’s older than Guerrero is now, it still positions him for a potential blockbuster contract—possibly over $400 million if current trends hold. Whether the Braves will make that kind of commitment remains to be seen, especially with his injury history.
On the flip side, Guerrero’s deal makes the Braves look smart with Matt Olson’s contract—eight years, $168 million. From 2021 to 2024, Guerrero posted a .293/.370/.517 line with 34 homers per season, while Olson hit .260/.355/.519 with 39 homers. Guerrero has a slight edge, but Olson’s $21 million annual salary is a bargain compared to Vlad’s $35+ million per year.
Bottom line: The Braves might have some big decisions ahead, but for now, their long-term deals are aging well.
