It might feel like a distant memory, but Daniel Jones only left the New York Giants last November. His time with Big Blue is still fresh in the minds of many fans. After a brief and quiet stint with the Minnesota Vikings — where he didn’t see the field — Jones is now with the Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts raised some eyebrows this offseason by signing Jones, likely to create a competitive dynamic with young quarterback Anthony Richardson. However, the situation quickly shifted when Richardson injured his shoulder during OTAs on June 5 — specifically re-aggravating a sprained AC joint he previously suffered in his rookie season, which had already cut that year short.
Daniel Jones: Next Man Up?
With Richardson sidelined, Jones is now in line to take the majority — if not all — of the first-team reps as the Colts begin veteran minicamp, according to WISH-TV’s Angela Moryan. What was initially expected to be a QB competition is now a golden opportunity for Jones to step in as the starter.
A Crucial Opportunity
Daniel Jones signed a one-year, $14 million deal with the Colts in March, and it may be his final shot to prove he can be a long-term starter in the NFL. As PFF analyst Ryan Smith pointed out in a May 16 feature, Jones is under intense pressure heading into the 2025 season. Despite earning overall PFF grades of 70.0 or higher in four of his six seasons, he’s never led a consistently successful team. If he can perform well with the Colts, he could position himself for a longer-term contract in 2026. If not, he risks being relegated to backup duty across the league.
Smith also highlighted that Richardson, while talented, has only appeared in 15 games over two seasons due to injury and inconsistency — making him far from a sure thing.
So, as training camp approaches and Week 1 looms, Daniel Jones finds himself back in the spotlight. Giants fans will surely be watching closely to see if their former QB can finally turn potential into results in Indianapolis.
