According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, former Braves reliever A.J. Minter will undergo season-ending surgery next Monday to repair a torn lat. Losing Minter in free agency was already a tough pill to swallow for the Braves, and his signing with division rival Mets only added salt to the wound—especially given how well he was performing early this season.
In 13 appearances for New York, Minter posted an impressive 1.64 ERA and struck out batters at a rate of 11.5 per nine innings. He looked dominant, and the hip injury that cut short his 2024 season seemed firmly behind him—making this new setback all the more disheartening.
The Mets, Atlanta’s fiercest rival and the current leader in the division, gained a top-tier arm in Minter. As a Brave, he was a rock in the bullpen for years, serving as Brian Snitker’s go-to setup man and playing a key role in the 2021 World Series championship run. Even after his departure, Minter spoke highly of the Braves organization, showing the kind of class fans appreciated throughout his tenure.
Pitcher injuries remain one of baseball’s harshest realities. For Minter, this marks a second consecutive season-ending injury. It’s a tough break for a player who meant so much to Atlanta, and one can only hope he bounces back again with the same resilience he’s shown before.
