**Senior tight end Jaren Kanak is returning to his roots.**
After three years as a linebacker for Oklahoma, where he racked up 102 career tackles (62 in 2023) and helped anchor a defense ranked 19th nationally in 2024, Kanak is making a bold switch back to offense for his senior season. A versatile athlete who starred as a quarterback and wide receiver in high school, Kanak is ready to rediscover his offensive identity.
“I caught passes and scored touchdowns in high school, but it’s been a while,” Kanak said. “I love the challenge of feeling like I’m behind and have to catch up. That hunger drives me.”
At Hays High School in Kansas, Kanak was a dual-threat dynamo, setting school records for rushing yards (1,615) and touchdowns (23) as a senior while throwing for 910 yards and 12 scores. His leadership propelled the team to an 8-3 record and a 5A quarterfinal appearance in 2021, earning him accolades like Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and a spot on the Kansas All-State team.
Despite his offensive prowess, Kanak initially embraced defense at Oklahoma, learning under head coach Brent Venables and standout linebacker Danny Stutsman. “I wanted to maximize my potential as a linebacker before considering a change,” Kanak said. “I shadowed Stutsman, studied film, and gave it everything I had.”
But after years of reflection and prayer, Kanak realized his true calling lay elsewhere. “It wasn’t about quitting; it was about following where I felt led,” he said. “I reached a point where I knew I needed to head in a different direction.”
Now, as he transitions back to tight end, Kanak leans on experienced teammates like Will Huggins and Kaden Helms for guidance. Huggins, a redshirt senior with a proven track record, and Helms, a resilient junior who’s battled injuries, provide mentorship and inspiration. “Kaden’s perseverance through adversity has been a huge influence on me,” Kanak said.
For Kanak, the move isn’t just about position—it’s about embracing his love for Oklahoma and its culture. “I’ve given so much to this program, and the relationships I’ve built here mean everything,” he said. “Being a Sooner is about grit, doing things the right way, and wanting to win.”
Teammates like junior linebacker Kobie McKinzie admire Kanak’s dedication. “Dude lives and dies by this program,” McKinzie said.
As Kanak embarks on this new chapter, one thing is clear: whether on offense or defense, his passion for Oklahoma football remains unwavering.
