When the New York Giants selected Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart in the draft, head coach Brian Daboll emphasized that veteran Russell Wilson would be the starting quarterback. While that plan still appears to be in place, recent speculation suggests the Giants haven’t ruled out the possibility of starting Dart early in the season.
Pro Football Network recently named Dart as the Giants’ top candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year. While it’s unclear how much he’ll play in 2025, quarterbacks have historically won the award—11 times since 2000. Dart’s final college season was impressive, earning a QB+ grade of 90.5, the best among all FBS quarterbacks in 2024 and one of the top 15 since 2019. If Daboll can tap into that potential, Dart could make a serious case for the award.
In truth, Dart stands out partly because the Giants drafted just four offensive players. The others—offensive lineman Marcus Mbow, running back Cam Skattebo, and tight end Thomas Fidone—are unlikely to crack the starting lineup right away. Meanwhile, Daboll is reportedly high on Dart, and with the Giants facing one of the toughest schedules in the league, a poor start could prompt an early switch at quarterback. And with weapons like Malik Nabers at his disposal, Dart could quickly emerge as a legit Rookie of the Year contender if he sees the field.
