The New York Yankees have reached an agreement on a Minor League deal with first baseman Dominic Smith, according to a source who spoke with MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. While the club has not yet confirmed the deal, this move could signal a potential opportunity for Smith to make an impact in the Yankees’ organization. Smith, an eight-year veteran, brings significant experience to the table, having played for multiple MLB teams over the years, including the Mets, Red Sox, and Reds.
Smith had a challenging 2024 season, posting a .233/.313/.378 batting line with six home runs and 34 RBIs across 93 games between the Red Sox and Reds. A majority of those games (84) were spent with the Boston Red Sox, where Smith struggled to find consistent success at the plate. His time with the Reds was cut short after being designated for assignment on September 2, leaving him looking for a fresh start with a new team.
The first baseman was originally selected by the New York Mets with the 11th overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, and he spent the first six seasons of his career in Queens. During his time with the Mets, Smith showed flashes of potential, slashing .246/.308/.424 with 46 home runs. However, his time with the Mets was marked by inconsistencies, and he was never able to fully secure a permanent spot in the starting lineup.
Now, with the Yankees giving him a Minor League opportunity, Smith will look to reestablish himself and earn a spot with the big league club. While he hasn’t been able to replicate his early promise in recent seasons, his power and ability to play first base could make him a valuable depth piece for the Yankees. It remains to be seen whether Smith can make the most of this new opportunity in the Bronx, but he’ll certainly be motivated to prove himself once again at the Major League level.
If Smith can find his form and perform well in the minors, he could become an option for the Yankees later in the season, whether as a potential power bat off the bench or a part-time starter at first base. With the competition at first base heating up for the Yankees, this move offers Smith a chance to rebuild his career and contribute to a team with championship aspirations.
