The Minnesota Vikings’ 2024 season was salvaged by their early move to sign Sam Darnold during NFL free agency. After rookie J.J. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, suffered a torn meniscus in his first preseason game, Darnold seized the opportunity and delivered a standout performance. McCarthy underwent two knee surgeries, sidelining him for the entire season, while Darnold thrived, ranking fourth in the NFL with 4,319 passing yards and 35 touchdowns. His efforts helped the Vikings reach the playoffs, but a disappointing two-game stretch in Week 18 and a Wild Card Round loss to the Los Angeles Rams raised questions about his future as the team’s starter.
Despite his late-season struggles, Darnold’s earlier success might still earn him a team-friendly contract, though his projected annual value dropped from over $40 million to around $35 million. Meanwhile, McCarthy is expected to recover in time for offseason activities, keeping him in contention for the starting role in 2025. His affordable contract, with cap hits under $7 million through 2027, makes him a valuable asset. However, if Darnold’s price becomes too high, the Vikings may pursue a veteran quarterback like Daniel Jones, who finished the season with the team. Head coach Kevin O’Connell’s ability to develop quarterbacks and the strong supporting cast of Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson make Minnesota an attractive destination for veteran QBs. Ultimately, McCarthy remains the frontrunner to start in 2025, but the Vikings have options to ensure stability at the position.
