The New York Yankees face a crucial offseason if they hope to return to the World Series in 2025. After falling short against the Los Angeles Dodgers this year—who dominated the series from start to finish—the Yankees now find themselves at risk of losing key players like Juan Soto, Anthony Rizzo, Gleyber Torres, and several important bullpen arms.
Without significant changes, the Yankees could see themselves overtaken in the American League East by teams like the Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, or Boston Red Sox.
In light of these challenges, The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner recently suggested that the Yankees should consider trading Marcus Stroman to the Washington Nationals. This is an idea I’ve long supported, and Kirschner dove into what such a deal could look like.
According to Kirschner, the Nationals are in the market for starting pitching depth, and a trade involving Stroman, $6 million, and infielder Jorbit Vivas could be a good fit. “Washington is looking to improve first base this offseason, and Yepez might be the odd man out,” he wrote.
“If this trade works, the Yankees would save $8.5 million while acquiring a pre-arbitration player in Yepez.”
Trading Stroman would be a significant move for the Yankees, especially after he failed to make the postseason roster this year. Clearing his contract off the books makes financial sense for New York, and adding Vivas and the $6 million wouldn’t be a major loss. However, the Nationals would benefit greatly from the deal, as they’d gain three assets they’re eager to incorporate into their organization.
