How badly did the New York Giants want to trade for Matthew Stafford? About $100 million worth of badly.
The Giants aggressively pursued the 37-year-old quarterback, reportedly offering up to $100 million in a new contract as part of a trade package. Despite their 3-14 record and concerns about their appeal as a destination, New York made a strong push to land Stafford. However, the veteran quarterback ultimately chose to stay with the Los Angeles Rams, agreeing to a restructured deal rather than heading to the Big Apple.
Stafford, who threw for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in 2024, clearly believes he can still compete for championships in Los Angeles. Last season, he nearly led the Rams to an upset over the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs, proving he still has plenty left in the tank.
For the Giants, Stafford would have provided instant credibility and made them a playoff contender. But in Stafford’s eyes, New York wasn’t the right fit to win big. Now, the Giants must pivot to Plan B.
Their new strategy will likely involve drafting a rookie quarterback with their top-three pick. Prospects like Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward are expected to be top-10 selections, but the Giants could also trade up to secure the No. 1 pick. Additionally, they’ll likely sign a veteran quarterback in free agency, with options like Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Sam Darnold, or even Aaron Rodgers on the table. While none of these veterans match Stafford’s recent performance, the Giants hope this dual approach can set them on a path to success.
Meanwhile, the Rams are sticking with their Plan A: keeping Stafford as their leader and continuing their pursuit of another championship.
