Imagine the excitement of receiving a breaking news alert that the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns have agreed to a blockbuster trade, sending future Hall of Fame pass-rusher Myles Garrett to Buffalo. For Bills fans, it would be a dream come true, showcasing general manager Brandon Beane’s willingness to make bold moves to push the team over the top.
Unfortunately, this scenario seems highly unlikely at this point. Despite Garrett’s clear desire to leave Cleveland, the Browns have firmly stated that he’s not available. The standoff between Garrett and the Browns will be one of the most intriguing storylines of the offseason, but teams like the Bills may not want to wait around for a miracle. Instead, they’ll likely turn to free agency to bolster their roster.
According to Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda.com, the Bills are rumored to have interest in veteran edge rusher Preston Smith, who recently spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith, who wants to finish his career with a playoff contender, could see Buffalo as an ideal destination. Drafted by Washington in 2015, Smith spent four years there before joining the Green Bay Packers for five and a half seasons. He was traded to the Steelers midway through last season and has since been released.
While Smith hasn’t been a consistent double-digit sack artist—he’s averaged seven sacks per season with only one 10+ sack year in 2019—he could provide valuable depth and mentorship for younger players like A.J. Epenesa and Javon Solomon. With Greg Rousseau already on the roster, Smith would be a cost-effective alternative to Von Miller, who the Bills may look to move on from.
If Smith is seeking stability, a superstar quarterback, and a chance to compete for a Super Bowl, Buffalo could be the perfect fit. While he may not be Myles Garrett, Smith could still make a significant impact as the Bills continue their pursuit of a championship.
