The Auburn football program has officially finalized its coaching staff for the 2025 season. The team saw several coaches depart for other opportunities, including former defensive coordinator Charles Kelly, who became the head coach at Jacksonville State, and Josh Aldridge, who took over as the defensive coordinator at East Carolina.
Earlier this month, former special teams coordinator Tanner Burns announced his departure to become the associate head coach, special teams coordinator, and defensive analyst at Texas State. To fill the role, head coach Hugh Freeze has brought in Chad Lunsford as the new special teams coordinator.
Lunsford has a history with Auburn, having worked on the Plains from 2009 to 2013 as the Director of Scouting and Player Personnel, contributing to the 2010 National Championship team. He played a key role in recruiting and evaluating prospects, using innovative methods and technology to help Auburn excel in recruiting battles.
After his time at Auburn, Lunsford moved to Georgia Southern, where he coached wide receivers, tight ends, and special teams from 2013 to 2016. He became the Eagles’ head coach in 2017, compiling a 28-17 record and leading the team to three bowl appearances. Lunsford’s most recent position was at Florida Atlantic University, where he served as tight ends and special teams coach. In 2023, he was promoted to associate head coach and special teams coordinator, even stepping in as the interim head coach in November 2024.
