The Atlanta Braves have had a sluggish start to the season, and with injuries piling up—especially the recent setback to Spencer Strider—they don’t appear poised for a quick turnaround. Sitting at 12-15 after 27 games, the team is off to a disappointing start, prompting questions about their next move if things don’t improve.
ESPN’s David Schoenfield recently suggested that if Atlanta continues to slide, the front office could consider trading power-hitting outfielder Marcell Ozuna. Ozuna, who was a top-five finisher in NL MVP voting last season, is in the final year of a five-year contract.
With his strong production and an affordable $16 million salary, he could attract significant interest on the trade market.
Schoenfield noted that given the Braves’ long-term payroll commitments, a contract extension for Ozuna isn’t guaranteed, especially if he commands a higher salary. While trading him would have seemed unthinkable before the season—given how vital he was to the team’s success—it’s now a plausible scenario if the Braves remain under .500 as the trade deadline approaches.
