Giants Urged to Target Jake Browning This Offseason

Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated recently suggested that the New York Giants should consider trading for Cincinnati Bengals backup quarterback Jake Browning during the offseason, providing insight into why it could be a smart move. Orr explained that Giants head coach Brian Daboll, who understands the importance of stability at quarterback, would benefit from adding a seasoned player who can make quick, accurate throws.

Orr proposed using an extra fourth-round draft pick to acquire Browning from Cincinnati, allowing the Giants to give their future quarterback, such as Cam Ward, time to develop in his first year. For Daboll’s system to succeed, he will ultimately need a quarterback who can both move the ball efficiently and bring the added dimension of running when necessary.

Although Browning didn’t register any statistics in 2024, he stepped in as a starter for the Bengals during the 2023 season when All-Pro Joe Burrow was sidelined with an injury. Over nine games and seven starts, Browning completed 70.4% of his passes, throwing for 1,936 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Had he played a full season, his pace would have put him on track for 3,656 passing yards. His ability to escape the pocket and make plays with his legs further enhances his appeal as a potential option.

In 2023, Browning proved himself as one of the NFL’s better backup quarterbacks, showing signs of potential if given a larger role. His accuracy as a passer, combined with his ability to pick up first downs with his legs, fits the mold of what the Giants have been looking for under quarterbacks like Daniel Jones and Tommy DeVito in recent years.

Despite Browning’s potential, the Giants should still prioritize selecting one of the top quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL Draft. Whether they land Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders with the third overall pick, Browning would be a reliable veteran option to support the development of their future franchise quarterback.
