The New York Giants’ 2022 draft class will become eligible for contract extensions next offseason, as those players approach the final year of their rookie deals.
One standout from that group is linebacker Micah McFadden, a former fifth-round pick who has steadily emerged as a key contributor on defense. At 25 years old and heading into his fourth NFL season, McFadden appears to be a strong candidate for an early extension.
McFadden Is Becoming a Core Piece of the Giants’ Defense
Since entering the league, McFadden has made significant strides each season. He’s quietly developed into a dependable presence in the middle of the Giants’ defense and is coming off his most productive year yet. In 2024, he tallied a career-high 107 total tackles in just 14 games, along with eight tackles for loss and three sacks.
With veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke sidelined for part of last season due to injury, McFadden stepped up admirably in a starting role, proving he can handle increased responsibility.

Giants Would Be Smart to Lock Him Up Early
Given McFadden’s upward trajectory, the Giants would benefit from signing him to an extension sooner rather than later. His value has grown steadily each season, and if he continues to improve in 2025, he could command a much larger contract in free agency by 2026—possibly exceeding what New York would be willing or able to spend.
By negotiating a deal this offseason, the Giants could secure McFadden at a more team-friendly rate and avoid future cap strain. An extension would also create about $1.8 million in additional cap space for 2025.
The Giants found a diamond in the rough when they selected McFadden in the fifth round. Now, it’s time to ensure he remains a long-term piece of their defensive puzzle.
