Giants Settle QB Depth Chart: Wilson Named Starter, Dart to Learn Behind Vets
One of the biggest offseason questions for the New York Giants entering the 2025 season was the state of their quarterback room — and now, it’s taking shape. After signing veteran QB Russell Wilson to a one-year deal in March, the team has officially named him the starter, while outlining a developmental plan for rookie Jaxson Dart.
Russell Wilson Era Begins in New York
Wilson, coming off a 12-game starting stint with the Steelers after missing the first six weeks of the 2024 season due to injury, brings a decorated résumé. The Super Bowl champion has led teams to nine playoff appearances and nine seasons with double-digit wins. His college success was just as impressive, finishing his NCAA career as one of only five FBS players to rack up over 5,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards.
Head coach Brian Daboll made it clear: Wilson will be the man under center when the season kicks off.
Rookie Jaxson Dart to Develop Behind the Scenes
General Manager Joe Schoen, speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio, emphasized that Dart will spend his rookie year learning behind veterans, including Wilson and Jameis Winston. The plan is to gradually develop Dart into a capable NFL quarterback while leaning on experienced leadership in the QB room.
“He can come in, sit behind a couple veteran quarterbacks and learn,” Schoen said, referencing the importance of patience and growth.
Lessons from Buffalo Shape Giants’ Approach
Schoen and Daboll previously worked together in Buffalo during Josh Allen’s rookie season in 2018. Although that QB transition wasn’t perfect, Schoen noted the current Giants situation offers more veteran guidance than they had with the Bills at the time.
“This time around, we do have a Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in the room,” Schoen said. “That experience is going to help Jaxson adjust to the complexity of NFL offenses.”
If needed, Schoen added, Dart will be ready: “He’ll be prepared if his number is called.”
