Corey Frazier, who has built a reputation for helping players transition from high school to the NBA, summed up Kentucky Wildcats signee Jasper Johnson’s performance at Overtime Elite this season in one word: “phenomenal.”
“Getting to know him and creating a plan focused on the areas he wants to improve has been great,” Frazier told Larry Vaught. “He’s been outstanding in everything he’s done. He’s quiet by nature, but he’s starting to open up. We’ve pushed him, and he’s responded well.”
Johnson, a 6-foot-4 combo guard, is turning heads at Overtime Elite in Atlanta while playing for the RWE team. He’s been a standout performer, averaging 20.7 points, 5.8 assists, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.4 steals per game. His shooting efficiency has been impressive as well, hitting 61% from inside the arc, 36.3% from three-point range, and 77% from the free-throw line.
In addition to his impressive stats, Johnson has also shown leadership on the court. During a recent game, Coach Frazier noted Johnson’s influence at halftime, as he encouraged the team’s big men in a positive and constructive way to improve their performance.
It was great to see him step up as a leader, using his voice to help others as one of the best players on the team,” Frazier said. “I’ve been working with Coach (Mark) Pope to ensure he maintains good body language and continues to develop his leadership skills.”
Frazier and Johnson have put in countless hours to hone his basketball skills, but Frazier has also been focusing on building Johnson’s leadership abilities, challenging him to take on new responsibilities each day.
Overall, it seems that Johnson is having the kind of senior season that Mark Pope and Kentucky were hoping for.
