Breaking-News; Offensive Potential to Match the Defense: Yankees Eye $60 Million Deal for Versatile Gold Glove Infielder

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has openly acknowledged that his team is in need of an infielder. Whether they acquire a third baseman or a second baseman remains to be determined, but it’s clear that an upgrade is necessary.

The Yankees have reportedly pursued top third-base targets like Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado, but there’s another option in the market that could fit their needs: Gold Glove-winning second baseman Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers, who played for the Colorado Rockies in 2024, posted a .267 batting average with 13 home runs and 54 RBIs, marking the second-highest average of his career—just 17 points below his career-best .284 in 2021. Known for his defensive prowess, Rodgers earned a Gold Glove at second base in 2021, making him a strong defensive option for any team.

While his offensive production is more defense-first, he’s proven capable of making solid contact when needed. According to Baseball Savant, his expected home runs in 2024 were 12.7, indicating that the home runs he did hit were earned based on launch angle and exit velocity.

Rodgers is expected to sign a five-year deal worth just over $56 million, with the possibility of it reaching $60 million, raising the average annual value to approximately $12 million. Signing Rodgers would make a lot of sense for the Yankees, giving them a reliable and consistent defender at second base. If Rodgers can maintain a batting average above .250 and slightly boost his RBI numbers, his contract could very well prove to be a worthwhile investment.
