Between 2020 and 2023, Oswald Peraza was widely regarded as one of the New York Yankees’ top prospects, a player with immense potential. However, while several others from that group, like Anthony Volpe, Luis Gil, Clarke Schmidt, and Austin Wells, have successfully transitioned into Major League roles, Peraza has struggled to take that final step.
Now, it seems that if Peraza is to become a regular at the big league level, it may not be with the Yankees. As the team gears up for the home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, reports suggest Peraza won’t be part of the group introduced during the pregame ceremonies.
Despite entering spring training with a legitimate chance to secure the starting third base spot, predictions have the Yankees choosing to keep veteran Pablo Reyes as a right-handed bat off the bench and depth behind Oswaldo Cabrera at third.
“Reading between the lines, Oswald Peraza’s future with the Yankees looks uncertain,” Chris Kirchner from The Athletic tweeted. “Pablo Reyes has moved ahead of him on the depth chart.”

With Peraza out of minor-league options, the Yankees face a tough decision. If he doesn’t make the 26-man opening day roster, they would have to designate him for assignment, but the chances of a once-promising prospect with elite defensive skills clearing waivers are slim.
This could prompt the Yankees to explore a trade involving Peraza, who signed as an international free agent at 16 in 2016. MLB analyst Jim Bowden, in his column for The Athletic, suggests the Yankees might trade Peraza, along with left-handed pitcher Henry LaLane (the No. 11 Yankees prospect) and right-handed pitcher Cam Schlittler (No. 12 prospect), to the Twins in exchange for 25-year-old third baseman Royce Lewis.
